Restoration of Artwork

Example 1

This photo is an example of what can be done to preserve an aged piece. The document is an award for a Kaiser Wilhelm medal presented to my great grandfather in the year 1897. Thanks to the good care that my mother had given this piece, it did survive the time well. The hand carved frame was in a very bad shape. After giving the frame a proper restoration, the document was then museum-quality matted and then placed in the frame, it is now ready to be properly displayed and enjoyed for generations to come.

Example 2

This Asian landscape scene stems from my great grandfather also. He brought these back from China at the time of the Boxer Rebellion. My mother again had stored these in a side compartment in the attic, an area where she did not go for over 15 years !

The left picture is how both pieces looked like after they were brought out of the attic. The right picture is how the piece looked like after years of grime, soot and dirt were removed. Incredible the difference !

The above picture shows what can be done to preserve aged pieces such as these. Both oil paintings have been properly restored and cleaned. The original frames were to badly damaged for them to be used again. The new frames are simple wooden frames bought from a local frame shop . My wife Paula then hand-painted the black splotches duplicating the original frames.

As you can see much can be done to preserve a piece of history, even a piece of family history !
